A Venezuelan opposition politician arrested on suspicion of involvement in a failed assassination attempt on President Nicolas Maduro has died after falling from the tenth floor of the headquarters of the country's intelligence service.
Government officials claim Fernando Alban killed himself by jumping from the tower-block in central Caracas, but his supporters claim intelligence officers murdered him.
The United Nations have today said it will investigate the 56-year-old councilman's mysterious death Friday.
Ravina Shamdasani with the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said Venezuelan officials were obligated to ensure Alban's safety while in their custody.
The probe into his death will be part of the UN's wider investigation of alleged human rights abuses, she said.
