The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, on Wednesday, announced some major changes to be effected from Oscars 2020. The changes will include a new award date – February 9th instead of the originally scheduled 24th, the addition of a new category designed around achievement in a popular film and broadcast time reduced to 3 hours. The Academy made the announcement via Twitter:
Change is coming to the #Oscars. Here's what you need to know:
– A new category is being designed around achievement in popular film.
– We've set an earlier airdate for 2020: mark your calendars for February 9.
– We're planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast. pic.twitter.com/oKTwjV1Qv9— The Academy (@TheAcademy) August 8, 2018
Hollywood Reporter further reveals that the move to ensure a 3-hour telecast would mean that only a select number of categories will be aired live while most will be announced during commercial breaks.
