INEC Begins Continuous Voter Registration April 27

The Indepedent National Electoral Commission has taken a decision to commence the nationwide continuous voters registration exercise on Thursday, April 27, 2017.

The commission is expected to commence the exercise with only three Resident Electoral  Commissioners as the Senate has not confirmed the list of 27 RECs forwarded to it for confirmation by the Presidency.

A National Commissioner and Acting Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee,   Mrs. Amina Zakari, said in a statement on Wednesday that the decision was taken at a special meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners and the Administrative  Secretaries from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to her, the meeting focused on the methodologies, modalities, and the date for the commencement of the nationwide exercise.

Zakari said that the exercise, programmed to take off in all the 774 local government areas of the country, would take place on weekdays from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am and 3pm.

She said further that the  exercise would give the opportunity to Nigerians who have turned 18 since the last registration exercise to register as voters.

She added that citizens,  who registered but could not collect their permanent voter cards before the last general election of 2015, would have the opportunity to collect them.

Zakari further stated that citizens whose names were captured in the voter register but were given temporary voter cards would be given the opportunity to collect the permanent voter card.

Zakari stated that registration centres would be opened in all the local government offices of the commission or other locations considered suitable by the commission.

She advised Nigerians who had registered before not to do so as it was an offence for any citizen to be involved in double registration.

Zakari who urged the citizens to cooperate with the commission to ensure the success of the exercise, restated the determination of INEC to give citizens continuous voter registration as contained in the constitution.
